Martin Mere is a wetland nature trust visitor centre a few miles from Southport on Merseyside. On the day I visited it seemed the new Ice Age was forming with solid ice underfoot making getting around hazardous to say the least. A few miles down the coast John Lennon Airport was apparently closed due to freezing fog and it was through some of those types of conditions we approached the visitor centre. An admission price of £8.75 seemed a little steep but once inside it was a pleasant an interesting visit. As well as many different types of birdlife there were also otters and a beaver sanctuary. The most stunning sight however was swan feeding time on the mere. An incredible view of literally thousands of birds just outside the generously sized hide.
