Nostalgia thread - start here: The midwinter friendly against Moscow Dynamo in 82 or whenever it was, standing up where the top of the old terrace was fenced off prior to decapitation and later covering, absolutely FREEZING MY NUTS OFF... The mayhem in the covered terrace after the 2-1 win against the Yams ending their long unbeaten run in 1987. The whole East Terrace chanting 'Die Die ya Hun' at St Mirren's Ian Ferguson lying injured in front of us when he had been touting himself to Rangers like the dirty hoor he was. And his retaliatory v-sign being met with cheers of victory - got ye ya bastard! Continue below...

Being jealous as hell watching the East stand from the West stand during the AEK Athens game. I was sitting beside you feeling exactly the same. Oh, I was also feeling the wrath radiating from a certain ex wife due to our lateness in getting to the game......

Found this in the London Hearts archive. I've seen another copy of this on the web with the score 4-3 to Edinburgh written on it. Can't find any further info at the mo, though I'll ask over at Scottishleague.net. Looks at any rate like oor Wullie (Ormond) was playing judging from Brian's photo.

Beat me to it Brian! No info on the crowd anywhere, but must have been close to the 50,000 range judging from the picture. What a sight!

I've never spent a lot of time in the East preferring a position in the West over the years - old and new. One memory that does stick in my mind very strongly though is Gary O'Connor's late, late winner against the Gunts.
I was in there with my good pal 'Ollie Reed' and the scenes as big Gary broke away to slam the ball into the net with Hibs down to ten men will stay with me forever. I remember we walked out behind the Famous Five Stand and Lawrie Reilly was celebrating in an upstairs suite and waving down to us fans as we streamed out. Sadly, if I recall correctly it was the day of Gordan Smith passing away.
Ironically the old East Terrace was my first ever memory of Easter road as a very young lad. Like many I was taken up high on that massive structure by my dad.
One final memory would have been from (I'm guessing) around 1978-80 when I came up with a mate and we had a private impromptu tour around ER by the then groundsman when he saw us standing by the pitch. It was that interim period when the top of the terrace had been removed and before the new roof was placed over the open terrace. It looked so curious after my previous memories of the place. I'd be intrigued to know exactly what year that would have been?

Ah well. I couldn't tell you the last time I was in the East Stand. Sad but true. The last season ticket I had was for the East Stand, but I sold that midway through season 02-03 to Gordon McKinlay so he could have the pleasure of making my ex wife feel uncomfortable for the rest of that season. Anyway, for most of the rest of my time at ER before emigrating I was in either the west or the FF stand.
When I first started going to games with my brother in the very early 70s we stood in the Cave, but eventually the east terracing was my home. Nothing will ever replace the feeling of going through those turnstiles and up those steps to stand in the same place every home game with the same people, to stand in those interminable queues for half time pies or those dreadful east terracing bogs.
Easter Road will never be the same again.

It could have been any time between 1978 and 1984 Stu - the high terracing was removed in 1978 and I remember the foundations and the pillars being started in 1985. I have plenty details and pics of the history of "The East Stand / Terrace / Stand" from 1893 to date - I'll try and put them together this week and send it on to you - unfortunately (you know my limits in IT) I've no idea how to post it

Thanks Brian. If I had to put a year on it I'd say 1979. It hadn't been removed very long. Don't know if you remember but there's a fantastic bit of 'previous' in Lugton 3 (cheers! for the happenings in the East Terrace yesterday by the way. Much of the wood from the long time former construction on that side of the ground being 'utilised' for garden fences in the vicinity of Easter Road and also in the cemetery I think. Reputedly some of it is still around! How fascinating to think of that link with Hibernian's past right there in a few people's back yards!

I am sure I stood on the terrace in the early 80s and the top tier was still there but fenced off. Scotsman today says (not that it's ever any kind of reliable source) that the top was removed in 83 and the roof built in 85, which sounds about right to me. I had a recollection that it was Duff and Gray who oversaw the roof construction, but I read somewhere else that it came at the end of Kenny Waugh's tenure.

You're correct Fraser - I took a wrong date for a picture as fact Some pics here s36.photobucket.com/albums/e43/hibbybrian/Stadium/
