Sadly another Hibee Legend passes
William Neil MacFarlane
Born: 17th March 1930 in Leith
Playing Career:
Willie was signed for Hibs by Hugh Shaw in 1949 from Tranent. Prior to playing for Tranent, Willie was a Team-mate of Tommy Youngers, for both Hutchison Vale and in the Army.
Willie made his debut at right back for Hibs in season 1953-54 against Tottenham and after missing the first European Cup game against Rot Weiss Essen played in the remaining 5 European Cup games, including the semi-finals in 1955-56. He played a total of 97 competitive games for Hibs and scored 2 competitive goals.
In April 1958, he signed for Raith Rovers and then played for Morton in season 1960-61 before ending his playing days with various border clubs.
Management Career:
-1967 Hawick Royal Albert
1967-1969 Stirling Albion
1969-1970 Hibernian
1970’s (?) Livingstone
As Hibernian Manager (Chairman: William Harrower - Tom Hart)
After Bob Shankly resigned, the board advertised for a new manager and Chairman William Harrower appointed Willie MacFarlane to lead the team for the 1969-70 season.
Despite not qualifying from their section in the League Cup and being knocked out of the Scottish Cup by Rangers in the first round, Willie rewarded Harrower’s trust in his ability by leading Hibs to finish 3rd in the League that season.
The following season got off to a good start with Hibs unbeaten in their League Cup section before 3-1 losses to Rangers in both legs of the Quarter Final, followed by the first League defeat at Pitodrie at the end of September. October saw Hibs qualify for the 3rd round of the Fairs cup and win the East of Scotland Shield against Hearts, whilst November was a mixed bag of results in the League. December started with a defeat at Broomfield followed by defeat to Liverpool in the first leg home tie.
In September 1970 William Harrower had sold his majority holding in Hibs to Tom Hart and in December 1970 Willie resigned. The crunch came in the build up to the Fairs Cup game with Liverpool at Easter Road when Willie and Tom Hart clashed over the team selection. Willie wanted to play Johnny Graham and Joe McBride; however the forward line which turned out was Davidson, McEwen, Stevenson, Blair and Duncan. The result was 1-0 to Tom Hart and unfortunately also 1-0 to Liverpool.
